Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Curriculum Mapping

When you bring a live performance into your gym or auditorium, it shouldn’t just be a day of passive entertainment. It should be an active catalyst for academic discovery. At Flumpa and Wendy The Singing Scientist, we have meticulously mapped our high-energy shows to align directly with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This ensures our elementary school science assemblies function as a direct extension of your weekly lesson plans.

Whether we are exploring life sciences through the lens of local ecosystems or diving into physical science with sound waves and energy, our performances translate abstract textbook concepts into unforgettable, multi-sensory experiences. By bridging the gap between national curriculum benchmarks and live theater, we help students retain complex scientific vocabulary long after the music stops. Teachers receive a comprehensive curriculum map before our arrival, allowing them to preview key concepts with their classes. This intentional structure transforms our elementary school STEM assemblies from a simple “fun day off” into a powerful, justifiable educational lab that principals and school boards are eager to support.

SOLO SHOWS featuring Wendy-The Singing Scientist

For years we have been asked to do smaller venues but could never ‘fit’ in the location with ‘the big guy.’  With that in mind, in 2016 we added Wendy-The Singing Scientist; STEM Comes ALIVE!

Includes the same great award-winning music that’s written by Wendy, a REAL scientist!  She is available for shows at daycares, small venues, church/religious schools, early elementary grades PK-1st and small libraries.  These shows are tailored to your venues needs in content as well as time.  Please call for information and special rates.

Wendy Whitten is an Applications Flavor Technologist that worked in the field of dairy flavoring.  She created some of the ice creams flavors you’re probably eating today!  Her degree, from the University of Maryland in Chemistry/Food Science Technology with a minor in Vocal Performance, lead her on this unique path. Combining her love of science with her flair for entertaining children through stories and songs she motivates and encourages participation.

“Learning comes alive… Capture all the mesmerizing charm of this gifted performer.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Which specific NGSS standards do your science programs target?

Our performances are cross-cutting and adapt to multiple grade levels (K–5). For younger students, we target life science standards such as plant and animal survival requirements (K-LS1-1). For older elementary students, our shows tackle complex physical science benchmarks, including the behavior of sound waves (4-PS4-1) and how ecosystems transfer energy through food webs (5-LS2-1).

Do you provide educational materials for teachers to use after the show?

Yes, absolutely. Flumpa and Wendy The Singing Scientist provides all booking schools with digital post-show Classroom Extension kits. These kits contain vocabulary reinforcement worksheets, follow-up science experiments that can be safely completed in a standard classroom with basic household items, and creative writing prompts designed to keep the excitement of scientific inquiry alive for weeks.

Can our school use Title I or STEM grant funding to book your assemblies?

Yes, many schools successfully fund our elementary school science assemblies using Federal Title I allocations or local state-level STEM grant programs. Because our shows are explicitly mapped to national NGSS standards and include academic follow-up materials, they meet the rigorous educational enrichment requirements mandated by most school district funding boards.

How do your shows engage different grade levels simultaneously in a school-wide assembly?

Our programs are designed with multi-layered engagement. For younger students (K–2), we use highly visual characters along with physical movement and catchy musical rhythms to introduce foundational scientific concepts such as habitats and weather. For older students (3–5), we integrate interactive science demonstrations, advanced vocabulary, and critical thinking challenges. If your school prefers, we can also perform split-session assemblies: one tailored specifically for K–2, and another with advanced STEM concepts for grades 3–5.

What space and technical setup does our school need to provide for the assembly?

Flumpa and Wendy The Singing Scientist. makes the hosting process completely stress-free. We are fully self-contained, meaning our team brings our own professional sound systems and props. Your school only needs to provide a performance space with access to a standard electrical outlet and a cleared seating area on the floor for the students. We handle our own setup and soundcheck in under an hour, ensuring zero disruption to your school’s daily bell schedule.
